Looking northeast from Jewish Quarter. Western Wall Plaza in foreground and right. Golden Dome is Dome of the Rock. Tower just to left of Dome is part of the Ashrafiyya Madrasa. Just NE of that tower, but out of sight is the Sabil of Qaitbay - features the only carved dome outside of Cairo. Entrance to Western Wall Tunnel is in left-center foreground. Distant low hill just to the right of center is Mount Scopus, location of Augusta Victoria Hospital (Lutheran supported)

Jerusalem Day One

This is the front of our hotel, The Olive Tree. It is directly across the street from the American Colony Hotel. If you know anything about the history of Jerusalem or Israel, you know how many important diplomatic deals have been made at the ACH.

The lobby - built to look like the Old City, but with internet service.

Where we have meals. Yes that is a live olive tree in the middle. Very, very, old. Today we are off to Bethlehem, finishing up this evening with a walk down Palm Sunday road on the western side of Mt of Olives. Should be a great day.

Notice - the timing on the postings is Mountain Time. Never changed my computer time. Actual time in Israel is nine hours in advance. I'm making this post on Thursday morning just after 6 AM. It's probably labeled Wednesday night about 9 PM.

Since the bus this morning doesn't leave until 8:15 AM, I took an early morning walk to see a couple of sites that are very near our hotel. This first pic is of the Mandelbaum Gate Memorial. Between 1948 and 1967 when Jordan had control of East Jerusalem, the Mandelbaum Gate was one of the few crossing points between East and West Jerusalem. Click for location. The American Colony and our hotel location were in that area controlled by Jordan, but just a short distance inside the 1949 Armistice line. Here's a wikipedia link about the gate.

And the place I've been looking forward to see - The American Colony Hotel. Located here.

A beautiful, historic place in Jerusalem. Hope to enjoy a glass of wine here with some of our fellow travelers one of these afternoons.
